Laying a Bead of Caulk

Caulking is vital for sealing off areas from moisture or temperature extremes. Creating an attractive bead of caulk is a useful and easy skill to master. The applicator tip should be smoothly cut at a 45-degree angle. The exposed hole should be slightly smaller than the crack you wish to fill. Hold the gun or tube at an angle similar to the angle of the tip. The edges of the tip should straddle the joint to be caulked. Whether you push or pull the tube or gun along the joint, keep the angle, pressure and speed of application consistent.
You can practice running beads using inexpensive painters' caulk. Put some paper or aluminum foil in a corner to create a practice surface. Starting with a single tube of inexpensive caulk can save you from making more costly mistakes later.
